The Top 10 Things You Need To Know Before Moving To Phoenix

If you are considering moving to Phoenix, do not make the transition until you do your research.  Perform your due diligence, scout out the area with an in-person visit and you will have a good idea as to whether you will enjoy living in Phoenix.  We have done some of the work for you!  Let’s take a look at the top 10 things to know before moving to the Valley of the Sun.

1. You Will Need a Car to Enjoy Living in Phoenix

Phoenix does not have public transportation services like New York City, Washington D.C. or Los Angeles.  Phoenicians drive automobiles to work, school and just about everywhere else.  Though limited light rail and buses are available, your quality of life will be much higher if you own an automobile.  Like most other cities in the southwest, Phoenix is spread out so it is extraordinarily challenging to walk, bike or maneuver the limited public transportation system to get from point A to point B.

2. Phoenix has a Monsoon Season

Though Phoenix has an arid climate, there is the potential for the skies to open up.  Monsoon season brings pounding rain, high winds and blowing dust.  This is quite ironic as Phoenix rarely receives rain throughout the rest of the year.

3. Prepare for Potentially Painful Heat

Phoenix is one of the hottest parts of the country.  Though this city is comfortable in winter, spring and fall, the summers are nearly unbearable due to the extreme heat.  The average high temperature in the Valley of the Sun in July now exceeds 104 degrees.  The silver lining is the lack of humidity won’t cause your hair to frizz up!

4. Phoenix has a Bustling Nightlife

Phoenicians hit the streets when the sun sets as this is an opportunity to enjoy the fresh air without sweating excessively.  Phoenix nightlife features nightclubs, bars and some truly amazing Mexican food.  Save your energy for the evening as this is the perfect time to socialize without being subjected to the sun’s wrath.

5. Phoenix is not a Barren Desert Town

There is a common misconception Phoenix and other cities in the southwest lack wildlife and natural beauty.  Phoenix has coyotes, snakes, birds and all sorts of other varied wildlife.  Spend enough time hiking this surprisingly green part of the southwest and you just might see Gila monsters, roadrunners, Javelinas, desert tortoises and possibly even a golden eagle.

6. Phoenix is Somewhat Dangerous

Like most other warm weather cities, Phoenix has its fair share of crime.  People are that much more likely to commit crimes in warm climates simply because they spend more time outdoors than those living in cold climates.  In particular, Phoenix has a comparably high rate of car theft and kidnapping.

7. Phoenix Traffic Spikes in the Winter

Snowbirds make Phoenix traffic even more congested during the winter.  This growing city is especially busy between November and February.

8. Phoenix has a Thriving Economy

People are moving to Phoenix and the rest of the southwest in droves for good reason: economic opportunity.  Half a dozen Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in Phoenix.  This is the perfect place to find a job or launch a business.  If you are willing to work hard, you will succeed as a Phoenician.

9. Bicyclists can Also be Happy in Phoenix

If you detest traffic and live fairly close to work, consider biking the Bicycle Boulevard.  This 4.6 mile bike lane provides a safe path of travel for bicyclists.  Just be sure to leave early in the morning before the heat sets in so you do not work up a nasty sweat commuting to work.

10. There is Plenty for Kids to Do

If you have a child, he or she will immediately fall in love with Phoenix.  Take your little one to the Arizona Science Center, a Phoenix Suns game or an Arizona Coyotes game and the entire family will have a blast.
